Greetings!

August 14, 2009

May the most you hope for be the least you get.
~Unknown

While winding down the summer, my hope is that you get all the relaxing you are hoping for, and more. We just got back from a Bethany Beach vacation with family and friends. I believe this is the 12th Annual. My how times have changed. We began with eight adults and eight children, plus assorted friends and daily visitors through the years. Due to life changes, this year we had six boomer adults and six young adults who came and went throughout the week. My eldest was in attendance, but our daughter had to work, and our youngest son was leaving for Cairo, Egypt on a film excursion. Gone are the days of making sure all heads are above the waves, counting children when in town, dodging water streams from water guns, stepping on yellow rubber pellets shot from Five and Dime guns, rallying the troops for ball games, and feeding a small army. Instead, we enjoyed grown-up conversations with our 20-somethings, devouring their great cooking (a most welcomed change),  reading entire books, more organized and peaceful games on the beach, and earlier bedtimes. With each life stage, I'm learning to embrace it for what it is, and to look for the good in all times. May you enjoy doing the same.

Hot days, family vacations, plenty of sunshine, and fresh produce. It seems that summer is coming to an end. Why not celebrate the end of the season by joining the NABBW with 25.00 off membership!

We are in the process of creating some new possibilities for the NABBW. Thanks to those of you who have thoughtfully responded to our survey. If you haven't done so, would you be kind enough to please take our survey about magazines? You can do so at this link. Thank you. Today is the last day to do so.

Receiving free media is always a greatly appreciated. ABC-2 News, Baltimore anchor woman, Mary Beth Marsden, read an article about the NABBW and BWS in Baltimore magazine, then felt moved to do a segment with me about boomer women for the evening news. Please see the new video, Boomer Women Online: A Conversation with Dotsie Bregel.

I hope you will join my assistant, Georgia Richardson and me August 25th at 3:00 PM (EST) while we give the history of the NABBW and BWS and allow time to answer your questions about launching the sites and association, and any other questions you may have about our boomer women audience. I look forward to hearing many of you on the call. More details are below.

If you haven't already done so, please submit your story for our writing contest which is posted below. The deadline is August 31st.

Sue William Silverman is doing an incredible job in our Featured Author forum. Please stop by and ask her your questions about writing and being published.

Be on the look-out for the details of the September Teleseminar when Sherrie Mathieson, author of STEAL THIS STYLE: Moms and Daughters Swap Wardrobe Secrets: Looks That Make Hip Classic and Classic Cool. Mathieson takes a fresh and thoughtful approach to fashion by describing in detail the styles and items that real mothers, of all backgrounds and sizes, and their grown daughters should and shouldn't share. She illustrates what so many women desire-a combination of high-end style with lasting value. Sherrie believes that while fashion is fleeting, great style is timeless. With the STEAL THIS STYLE teleseminar, she hopes to give women the insights and tools they need to look and feel just as good as their daughters!

Girls Getaway to Charleston, Nov. 13-15
The NABBW is excited to partner with Casey Wohl, The Getaway Girl ® for planning future boomer women trips. It's been brought to our attention that there are plenty of boomer women who are interested in traveling, but don't want to venture out alone. This will allow us to meet face to face and enjoy one another while vacationing at different spots across the country. Our first vacation will be to charming and hospitable Charleston, SC, November 13-15. Mark your calendars and plan to attend as we get some much-needed R&R before the holiday season sets in. Prices will be based on double occupancy, so let your girlfriends know as well. Details will be available soon. Contact me at dots@nabbw.com if you are interested in joining us.

If you like to shop, please visit our  Boomer Mall. In addition to regular shopping at most of the main stores across the country, we also feature the Reverse Auction which is the latest way to shop. People believe it will pass EBay in time. It's going gangbusters in Europe. All items in the auction are already the lowest price you will find online. You simply purchase tickets for 80 cents. Then you see what you are interested in buying. The price is not showing so you use a ticket to reveal the lowest selling price at the moment. Once you see the price, you may purchase at that time, or keep watching and try revealing the price a couple hours later. Every time someone checks the price, the price drops! People from around the world are bidding so the price continues to drop until someone decides to buy it. People are saving a small fortune! I hope you'll jump in and begin shopping.

Boomer Male Expert,
Jed Diamond . . .

www.menalive.com
www.TheIrritablemale.com

Having a master's degree is social work and a PhD in international health didn't protect him from male menopause. The male change-of life nearly destroyed his health and almost wrecked his long-term marriage. Coming through to the other side, he began research to understand the mystery of male menopause.

As author Gail Sheehy commented, "If menopause is the silent passage, male menopause is the unspeakable passage. It is fraught with secrecy, shame, and denial. It is much more fundamental than the ending of the fertile period of a woman's life, because it strikes at the core of what it is to be a man."

After five years gathering information from around the world, he wrote a series of books to help men, and the women who love them, understand and cope with the changes that males go through at mid-life including:

Male Menopause (1997)
Surviving Male Menopause (2000)
The Whole Man Program (2002)
The Irritable Male Syndrome (2004)
Mr. Mean:  Saving Yourself and Rescuing Your Relationship from the Irritable Male Syndrome  (Expected publication 2010).

His books have been translated into more than 25 foreign languages and he counsels men and women from around the world.

In Jed's words . . .

Part of our mid-life healing was to move from the high-stress life of being a sought-after psychotherapist and author in the San Francisco bay area to the small town of Willits, California. My wife, Carlin, and I raised our 5 children and looked for a place where we could do our work and live in a way that was more in balance with nature.

We live on 22 acres of land, and are part of the Transition Town, economic localization, movement that is sweeping the world.

I love writing. In addition to books, I write articles for a number of internet sites. I also send out a monthly newsletter to more than 20,000 subscribers. I invite you to visit my website and sign up for my FREE publication that will keep you abreast of my work.

Although my work is focused on men's health, nearly half my subscribers are women. I've found that women are vitally interested in what is going on with men today and how to have more healthy, vibrant, long-lasting relationships.

I continue to do counseling with men and women in my office as well as by phone with people calling from throughout the U.S. and around the world.

To further acquaint you with my work, I've posted some of my most requested publications on Scribd. You can check them out at HERE. If you have questions, feel free to write me at Jed@MenAlive.com. I try and answer all mail that I can.

Writing Contest!

The National Association of Baby Boomer Women announces a new writing contest...

Boomer Women Speak
How my Life Changed in One Moment

According to Sue William Silverman, author of Fearless Confessions: A Writer's Guide to Memoir, everyone has a story to tell.  Here is your assignment from Sue in order to help you get started telling yours.

In 500 words or less, write one scene, a mini-memoir, depicting your life-changing event. Be sure to include sensory details. Here is an example: Think of a woman trying to write about how one night over dinner, in an expensive restaurant, her husband announced he was leaving her. She might describe the sound of rain pelting the windows, the noise of the happy couples surrounding them, or maybe the soup growing cold in the bowl. All of these details help reinforce her feelings at this crucial junction of her life.

Now it's your turn to write a short scene that shows your own life-changing moment. Where did the event happen? Who were you with? How did it impact the larger story of your life?

CONTEST GUIDELINES:
Using 500 words or less,  set a scene, using some sensory details, that describes one life-changing moment.  Think about;
  • How this moment marked a turning point, a beginning or an ending;
  • How you feel about that event now, reflecting back, with the advantage of hindsight;
  • If it was a sad or traumatic moment, did you overcome it and ultimately feel empowered?  Or, if it was a joyous occasion, what did you learn from that?
Please submit your entry in the BODY OF THE EMAILto contest@nabbw.com with Confessions in the subject line. Include your name, email address, and short bio (no more than 75 words) with the email entry. Entries needing editing will not be accepted.

DEADLINE:
August 31, 2009

PRIZES ARE:
GRAND PRIZE - 100.00 and F-R-E-E membership or renewal in the NABBW.
FIRST RUNNER UP - An autographed copy of Fearless Confessions PLUS a copy of Sue Silverman's two memoirs.
SECOND RUNNER UP - An autographed copy of Fearless Confessions
