Dear Dotsie,
Do not look back with
shame, nor look up with arrogance, nor look around
for blame. Just look ahead with dignity. --- Brahma Kumaris - Daily inspiration at Thought for Today
Greetings,
Many of you may recall my excitement and fear about
entering the empty nest last September as our
youngest two left for college. Well, now I am faced with
those same emotions as our oldest returns after his
college graduation. Ah - midlife, sound familiar? Just
when we get used to one way of life, it changes. The
kids come, they go. The only thing that stays the same
is the fact that Ross and I are always here together; for
that I am grateful. See, we must stay focused on the
positive! Oh, and our son has a job in his major. Lots
to celebrate.
In addition to the thrill of our son's graduation
weekend, we've had lots of other neat things
happening too. This month we partnered with Grand
magazine (NABBW members who have not yet signed
up for your FREE one year subscription to Grand,
please email me at dots@boomerwomenspeak.com and I'll send you
the link to do so).
I also interviewed with a
couple
radio stations and bloggers and had a feature article
in the Baltimore Sun. What does this mean for
members of the NABBW? More benefits and
more traffic to the sites. Members who have published
articles get more visibility and members who
advertise do the same. One of our associates even
signed with a literary agent by having her articles
posted at www.nabbw.com.
The results of our member survey shared that boomer
women are interested in more educational
opportunities. We've taken that call to heart and will
soon launch the Boomer Women's Resource
Center: Expanding Our Minds - Enriching Our Worlds -
Reinventing Our Lives. We'll offer CDs, PDFs and
Audio Files for all topics boomer women at
reasonable prices. Please watch your email for this
exciting launch.
Now's the time to sit back, grab your favorite drink, and
get in the know by reading about all things boomer
women.
We are happy to announce that when searching "baby
boomer women" online, www.BoomerWomenSpeak.com is ranked first on Google, and www.nabbw.com is ranked first
on Yahoo. Why not advertise with us? Email me at advertising@boomerwomenspeak.com for advertising rates.
Onward with grace,

change in our lives know how daunting this journey
can be. Whether the struggle is with weight, unfulfilled
financial or personal goals, or with patterns of
negativity that we just can't seem to break, Eli
Davidson's Funky to Fabulous uses humor, wit, and
sound advice to identify those struggles and then,
catapults us forward. A motivational speaker and an
Authentic Success Coach with a master's degree in
Spiritual Psychology, Eli is creative, upbeat, and
original. She tackles relationship, career, and body
image issues in deep, yet light-hearted ways,
enabling the realization that, yes, there are serious

relatively easy and right at our fingertips.
While occasionally some self-help books offer
overwhelming and difficult strategies, Funky to
Fabulous provides practical and realistic approaches
to making the absolute most of every day, and every

FINAL 5 PITFALLS TO
AVOID WHEN DISCUSSING THORNY TOPICS WITH
YOUR AGING LOVED ONE
By Barbara E. Friesner
Discussing thorny
topics with your aging loved one(s) is difficult even
under the best of circumstances - as many family
members who have tried and failed can tell you. But
since resolving issues is a lot easier before a crisis,
for the past 2 months I've been giving you Pitfalls to
avoid if you want to be successful when you discuss
thorny topics with your aging loved one. Here then are
the final 5 Pitfalls.
PITFALL #1)Thinking there is only 1 solution
(Yours!)
Some of the reasons family members may think there
is only 1 solution (theirs!) is because they only know
about 1 solution - perhaps it's a solution that a friend
used or they read about. Or maybe because basically
it's an "ok solution" and since they didn't plan ahead,
there's no time to come up with a different one or
others. Or perhaps because they were thinking only in
terms of their needs such as having their loved one
move into an assisted living because it just solves
everything. Or maybe it's a matter of ego - thinking
their solution is right because it's their solution. Think
out of the box and be creative.

Menopause and Yeast
Infections
By Cathy Taylor
Caused by an overgrowth
of Candida albicans, a fungus, yeast infections are the
most common of all vaginal infections. Yeast
infections are not sexually transmitted and are often
caused by menopause. Of all vaginal infections, yeast
infections are one of the main symptoms of
menopause, caused by the fluctuating hormones
leading to bacteria in the vagina going out of
control.
Baths, excess moisture in the vagina, or damp or tight
clothes may lead to yeast infections. The signs of
yeast infection during menopause, as well as
otherwise, are: inflammation, continued itching and
irritation, pain during intercourse, frequent urination,
and a thick, white discharge from your vagina.
With the drop of estrogen levels during menopause,
the walls of your vagina become thinner and weak.
During intercourse, the walls become irritated,
leaving tiny scars and scratches, enabling bacteria to
thrive.

The FOCUS Marketing

Entrepreneurs and small business owners know they
need to market their business to make more money
and attract more customers, but they often don't know
how to go about it. That's why my FOCUS Marketing
(Trademark) Method is such a powerful tool. It gives
you specific techniques to make your marketing efforts
pay off.
"F" is for Filtered. Concentrate on targeting people in a
specific niche market to attract your ideal clients-
those people who you serve well and who you are
most alike. Think about what types of people you best
identify with and what life experiences, interests,
hobbies, and roles you might share with them. Then
consider whether they are people you'll want to work

Keeping
Perspective
By Natalie Caine
May, the
month of Mother's Day, kids on the way to graduating
high school and college, getting a job or planning a
wedding.
May. May we . . .
- find excitement in figuring out what is next for
us
- have new visions of how to relate to our adult
children
- have faith that our children have learned to make
good decisions for themselves
- feel okay about them not knowing what is next for
them
- realize they left our nests because they were ready
to fly
Empty nesting is the stage of life where the days of
planning meals, carpooling kids and overseeing
homework are replaced with the exciting days of
having time to ourselves to do and be anything we
want. Our new lives can be filled with adventure and
personal satisfaction.

Saying Yes
By Prill Boyle
This has been my "year
of yes."
I said yes to Africa when my Peace Corps friend
invited me, yes to Amsterdam when my husband
asked, and even yes to speech-giving lessons when a
woman I met at a party offered them.
After years of practicing saying no, I'm loving saying
yes.
The phrase "the year of yes" comes from a book of the
same title by Idaho native and aspiring playwright
Maria Dahvana Headley.
Feeling like she's "dated and then hated every man in
Manhattan," Headley resolves to stop being so picky
and say yes to anyone (within reason) who asks her
out on a date. No drunks, druggies, violent types, or
cheating husbands. Everyone else gets a
nod.
Headley's first date is with her building's Puerto Rican
maintenance man, who shows up to fix her toilet and
ends up asking her out.
The second is with a 40-year old classmate who
speaks mostly Polish.

Dangling Carrots Wilt
By Nan S. Russell
"Red tape. Infighting. Office politics. Employee morale.
Can't get things done. Lack of communication. Layers
of bureaucracy. Not valued. Rude, difficult people.
Indecision. Lack of support. Inconsistency. No clear
direction." These are sample answers from readers to
a Winning at Working survey that asked about the
biggest problems at work. And then we wonder, as
supervisors and managers, why employees aren't
motivated?
Working with a client on a consulting engagement
recently, the issue came up again and again, "How
can I motivate my employees?" My answer wasn't the
quick-fix the client wanted. "You can't," I said. "But what
you can do is more powerful and sustaining. If you
want motivated employees, create an environment
where people can be self-motivated."
You see, efforts to rouse, stimulate or encourage
behavior are short-lived. That's not to say
expectations, incentives, pay for performance or fear of
consequences don't work to improve results for a
time. They do. But, carrot-and-stick approaches don't
solve the problems that reduce motivation, initiative
and engagement. So results are often fleeting.

Happy Mother's Day to Meeee!
By Georgia Richardson
Before you say it,
I'm not one of those people who hang on to their
grown children never cutting the apron strings. Not
this independent gal. No sir-ree. As my sons moved
out, first the oldest, then the youngest, I kept a stiff
upper lip and only cried after I saw their tail-lights
disappear down the road. I only called them on
Sundays and Wednesdays and a few Saturday
mornings around 7:00 am. That was it. I swear it. They
cannot prove the other calls were mine. Hey, is it my fault they can't afford Caller ID?
Once the nest was empty, I created my own life and
carried on with only a smidgen of "grief" showing. I
wrote, I stayed up late and ate foods that were bad for
me, and changed channels on the TV over and over,
simply because I could. I ran around the house
without a bra. Ah, the good life.
Righttttt. So much for the first day. The next day, I cried.
All day.

Dancing with the Stars
By Donna Shepherd
There is a time to cry, and a
time to laugh; a time to have sorrow, and a time to
dance. - Ecclesiastes 3:4 (New Life Version)
We seem to have a lot of television shows dedicated
to the 'stars.' Gossip and entertainment shows
abound. Everyday people vie for the opportunity to
interview, dance with, or touch a famous person.
Magazines employ large teams of writers to report on
the latest makeup tips, clothing styles, and private
lives of the celebrities.
Even in Christian circles, we have a few people who
some might be consider 'stars' - pastors of mega-
churches, televangelists, and best selling authors.
Even the disciples felt the need for the spotlight. They
debated who would be the greatest in the Kingdom.
We read the account in Luke 9:46-48, "An
argument arose among them as to which of them was
the greatest. But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of
their hearts, took a child and put him by his side and
said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name
receives me, and whoever receives me receives him
who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the
one who is great."

Fat is Your Friend
By Mary Pearsall
Are you thoroughly
and utterly confused about the different types of fat -
what you should avoid and what you should include in
your diet? Join the club! Recent research on the
health advantages and disadvantages of various fats
and oils has left the majority of us confused about
what to take to the checkout stand and what to leave
on the shelf. Low fat diets were all the rage for years,
and now we are told that we actually need to eat fat to
maintain a healthy and well rounded diet!
Yes, it is true that fat is on located on the food pyramid
and is not the evil foe as we were led to believe.
Indeed, fat is our friend and serves many useful and
necessary functions in our bodies. However it is
important to know what kinds of fat to include in your
diet and what to avoid for optimum health benefits.
Following these tips will help alleviate confusion at the
market and contribute to a better understanding of the
options available.

Words Aren't Enough
By Julie Clark Robinson
Usually I can write
my way out of any kind of emotional burden. I've
learned that when my chest is heavy, if I just give
myself enough time at the keyboard, the problem
invariably ends up on the paper in front of me - not
stuck in a knot in my heart. An anxiety that exists on a
piece of paper, I can handle. But this time - with the
sudden death of my teenage niece Sarah - words just
aren't enough.
As an author, I know that every
word I select needs to be precisely right for the
meaning I am trying to convey. I don't use "run" when I
mean "dash". I search for "periwinkle" instead of
merely typing "purple". But my wordsmith Olympics
have come to a screeching halt lately as I try to come
up with something to say to help my sister deal with
the loss of her only daughter. And even if I put myself
through a thesaurus-type marathon of a lifetime, the
problem on the computer print-out in my hands
doesn't come close to eliminating the thud in my gut
every time I remember that Sarah is gone.

"Are You Free to Be
Fabulous?"
By Judith Sherven, Ph.D. & James Sniechowski,
Ph.D.
"Who do you think you
are?"
"Don't get a swelled head!"
"Remember where you came from."
"Think you're too good for us?"
"People like us don't go to places like that."
That list of hold-backs could go on and on. And every
one of us-including you- has been subjected to
some form of commandment to NOT break out
beyond where you came from, to not leave
your "station" in order to be truly fabulous.
Whether it came from a demanding and controlling
parent, a terrified and anxious teacher, an abusive
coach, or any number of relatives, romantic partners,
or so-called friends who didn't know any better . . . the
damage happened anyway.
And what's the damage . . . ?

THE GIFT OF
SINGLENESS
By Karen Stephen, Ph.D.
Is Singleness a Blessing or a Curse?
I think many single women looking at the title of this
month's column are likely to take exception to the
thought that being single is a gift. Unless, of course,
they have just extricated themselves from an abusive
situation; in which case, they are breathing a
momentary sigh of relief.
But in the long run, most women consider singleness,
whether widowed, divorced, never married, or simply
flying solo as a life status filled with loneliness,
longing, discrimination (in a coupled world), extra
chores, and a sense of unfulfillment. Yes, there are a
scattering of freedoms from having to consider
another person's point of view or demands or desires,
but these don't seem to counterbalance the
pain.
To understand how singleness might be a gift and
what psychological and spiritual tools we will need to
see it as such, let's start with the other gifts we have

Should You Consider a
Reverse Mortgage?
By Jan Cullinane
A reverse
mortgage is a loan against the equity you have built up
in your home. It allows you to receive extra income,
and when you die, vacate, or sell your house, the loan
is repaid. You must be 62 years of age or older to
obtain a reverse mortgage, and the loan applies only
to your primary residence.
There are several
possibilities-you can receive a lump sum, monthly
payments, a line of credit, or some combination of
these options. The homeowner retains ownership of
the home during the reverse mortgage period. Since
these types of mortgages can be complex and involve
fees, you need to be comfortable with how the costs
stack up against how much you will receive in loan
advances and how much equity will remain at the end
of the reverse mortgage period.
There are several types of reverse mortgages, but the
only kind insured by the federal government are the
home equity conversion mortgages (HECMs).

The Scoop on High
Cholesterol and What You Should Know
By Robin Miller, M.D.
Many women have
high cholesterol and are totally unaware of it. Nearly
two thirds of women at highest risk of heart attack, and
death from heart disease, are not being treated
appropriately to lower their cholesterol. That is why it
is so important that you know what your levels are and
what they mean!
What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is found in every cell of the body. It is
important for building hormones. When there is too
much cholesterol in the body it can deposit in blood
vessels and cause inflammation. Eventually it can
cause a build up of plaque with narrowing and
eventually completely clog the vessels. This can result
in a stroke or a heart attack. Cholesterol is what is
called a lipoprotein. It is one of many that can cause
these problems.
