    February 2007

    Dear Dotsie,

"Many things will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart . . . PURSUE THOSE." ---Anonymous

    Greetings,

I hope everyone is busy pursuing whatever it is that is touching your heart. I am grateful because I've found that so much of my work is heart-touching. I thoroughly enjoy enlightening educating, empowering boomer women.

I'm gearing up to share more with you by attending the More Magazine Wilhelmina Model Search Event www.more.com in New York during February and the Boomer Summit www.boomersummit.com/ in Chicago during March. I'm also thrilled that the very first Booming Women Conference www.boomingwomen.com is being held in LA next weekend. Fran Harris is busier than ever making sure everything goes without a hitch. I know it will.

My favorite work day this year was spent judging the NABBW sponsored contest, Top Ten Things Boomer Women Want in 2007. I'm grateful for all the women who chose to enter. I was amazed by the number of similarities within each submission. You can see the results at this link: WHAT WOMEN WANT.

While reading this month's newsletter, please make note of the excellent articles our associates have written. They work very hard to give you information about topics that many of us may be experiencing on a daily basis. Also notice that I am blogging every Monday with Allison Bottke and four other Christian Boomer Babes at www.boomerbabesrock.com.

Also, be sure to read about our Featured Associate Sheri' McConnell. If you have an online business, you may consider joining her National Association of Web Entrepreneurs (AWE) of which I am a very faithful member.

We are happy to announce that when searching "baby boomer women" online, Boomerwomenspeak.com is ranked first on Google, and NABBW.COM is ranked first on Yahoo. Why not advertise with us? Email me at dots@boomerwomenspeak.com for advertising rates.

Both sites continue to attrack tons of traffic. In the last thirty days, we've had well over a hundred people sign up for this newsletter with some joining the NABBW.

That's all for this month. I hope you find time to browse the entire newsletter and share it with your friends, sisters and colleagues.

    Onward with grace,
    Dotsie

Gratitude Works: Open Your Heart to Love

    KATHERINE SCHERER AND EILEEN BODOH
    www.gratitudeworks.com

For the month of February, we are very pleased to have NABBW members and co-authors, Katherine Schererand Eileen Bodoh as our Featured Authors in the Boomer Women Speak forums.

    In their words . . .

Eileen and I both come from long business backgrounds, she as a paralegal, and myself as a partner in a family painting and decorating business. When my children were growing up, I was a religious education teacher, and my training at Family Service and the Women's Crisis line in Milwaukee helped me lead parent education groups.

Eileen's workshops with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross led her to become a hospice volunteer. Her ongoing involvement with the Austrian community in Milwaukee and Chicago in chairing cultural events resulted in her receiving the Decoration of Merit in Silver from the Republic of Austria.

We met while serving on the marketing committee for our church and feel we were brought together because we both had a burning desire to make a difference.

After attending countless workshops, including the Hospice "Twilight Brigade/Compassion in Action" training, we realized that gratitude had not been a major focus in our lives. In the process of keeping gratitude journals, the idea for our book was born. When we opened our eyes to see all the things that we were grateful for, even simple things began to appear miraculous.

While writing "Gratitude Works," we included gratitudes both mundane and extraordinary giving praise to the beauty life beholds.

Our mission is "touching lives with the spirit of gratitude." In the process of marketing our book by donations to various organizations, a small number of "Gratitude Works" ended up at a women's prison in Texas, the Plane State Jail. We've since donated over 500 books. Some of the comments we've received are:

---- "I am writing this request to ask for the touching lives with spirit of gratitude because I saw it on a buddy's bed and it touched my heart. Please mail my heart one."

---- "I would like to say thank you and how much you've made a difference in touching of lives, our hearts and feelings, our thoughts!"

We are continuing our prison work with our THREE FOR THIRTY campaign. Gratitude is our chosen path and we are too blessed to be stressed . . .

Be sure and visit the forums at BWS in February as these authors share their life experiences and teach us all about Gratitude and about expressing thankfulness for life and for the many things that we take for granted.

To learn more about these authors, visit their Web site at www.gratitudeworks.com.

    FEATURED MEMBER

Margaret May Damen, CFP, CLU, ChFC, CDFA
    President and Founder
The Institute For Women and Wealth, Inc.
    www.instituteforwomenandwealth.org

I was blessed to grow up in a household with two strong, determined and loving women, my mother Lillian and my grandmother, Mary. Both lived healthy lives to age 94 and both were astute business owners and devoted community leaders. Their constant answer to my never-ending question of how did they do it all was a W. Clement Stone quote, "It's not your aptitude but your attitude that gets you to your altitude."

Lillian and Mary's mantra served me well through the perils of my 40-year career as an educator, financial planner, fundraiser and philanthropic consultant/coach that began at Boston University and included 18-years as a Senior Financial Advisor with American Express Financial Advisors.

This third generation mantra sustained me and my entrepreneurial spirit in 2000 when I established my Institute For Women and Wealth in Palm City, Florida. I had searched the country and the internet to find a forum where economically secure women could find the holistic advice, workshops and services to express their "attitude of gratitude" for the blessings of the time, talent and treasures in their life. A place where women could become confident to "unlock the wealth within" that would reconnect their values and virtues, live a purposeful life and leave a meaningful legacy.

The fabulous and rewarding feedback from the women who were empowered to fulfill their abundant wealth legacy after attending my lectures, workshops, seminars and retreats in the past six years throughout the country has inspired me to write my current book, "Torchbearers For Virtuous Philanthropy: Boom-Generation Women's Destiny." The book in part describes how our current philanthropic "attitude of gratitude" has evolved by the distillation of our values through the forty year journey from the "consciousness revolution" to what I now call the current "compassionate resolution" as we act out the essence of our values in philanthropic leadership roles to make the world a better place for the greater good of society. The book will be published this summer. Meanwhile I will be speaking in Dallas in March, Houston in May and Atlanta in June. Would love to meet you and share your "attitude of gratitude" stories. My email is mmdamen@earthlink.net or contact me at my web site, www.instituteforwomenandwealth.org

The Queen of My Self: Stepping into Sovereignty in Midlife
    www.thequeenofmyself.com
    By Donna Henes

Reviewed by by Lynn Tolson, author of Beyond the Tears: A True Survivor's Story.www.beyondthetears.com

Donna Henes states that she has thirty years experience as an "urban shaman and contemporary ceremonialist" and that she was a "proud member of the pioneering Sixties Generation." When she found herself lacking in role models to mentor her through middle age, Henes chose to use her own leadership abilities. She developed "The Queen" image for herself and her cohorts. In doing so, she created not only a royal attitude, but also a lifestyle guide. Henes has established an enriching experiential "how-to" for stepping into middle age with aplomb.

Henes uses the classic "Queen" as a continuous theme throughout the book. Each of the eight chapters has a heading befitting the regal premise, plus a sub-heading of real world methods toward fulfillment. For example, Chapter 5 is titled "The Queen and I" with a sub-title of "Embracing Her Majesty." The readers are encouraged to "design our own roles and ideals, compose the scripts, and author the sagas of our own futures." The author presents personal experience and case studies of women who have successfully reinvented themselves in middle age; readers can easily relate to these examples.

Each chapter offers multiple suggestions helping readers identify their own wishes and wants. If one style of story telling is not suitable for a specific reader, another style for the same subject is sure to meet the reader's needs. Henes even uses her own poetry to get the point of self-improvement across to the reader. The result is a book that is well- crafted, engaging, and entertaining.

There are also practical applications within the context of The Queen and with all that the author offers, Queen of My Self is a gift that keeps on giving. Ladies, put on your gem-studded tiaras! You are in for a great read from a thoughtful and thought-provoking author who is for and about a well- lived middle-aged life.

    The Art of Table Dancing
    Escapades of an Irreverent Woman
by DC Stanfa, Professional Speaker and Writer
    www.dcstanfa.com

    Reviewed by Patti Trapp, www.pattiswriting.com

DC Stanfa is an amazing author who pours humor and the importance of self-esteem into her writing. This compilation of true stories covers childhood; questioning authority and religion, through adulthood; with all its pain and pleasure, dating and rejection, angst and discovery.

It is well written, enjoyable and is at times painfully honest. The Art of Table Dancing is about the transformation from ugly duckling to beautiful womanhood¬óinside and out. DC openly shares learning to accept herself, love herself and to trust her own instincts; things we all wrestle with. By reading about her own struggles through a humorous lens we can begin to laugh (a little) about our own life tales; the ones we want to celebrate and the ones we still shudder over. This is one book you will definitely enjoy reading!

WHAT'S THE BEST THAT COULD HAPPEN
    By Barbara E. Friesner

How often have you done something that you really dreaded and heard yourself saying "that wasn't so bad"?

On the other hand, how many times have you feared the worst about, say for example, an eldercare issue. Sure you know it's a problem. You see all the tell-tale signs of trouble - the car accidents (or near misses); health problems not being addressed; bills not being paid; increasing forgetfulness; inability to take care of themselves in their home. You know you should do something but because of the fear, you put off addressing the issue for weeks, months, or even years. You hope it will get better or go away but it gets predictably worse. Then the crisis hits and suddenly there are fewer and fewer options and it spirals out of control. Now it is, in fact, the worst that could happen.

So what can you do to avoid the inevitable "what if's?'; "if only's'; or "shoulda-coulda-woulda's'?

Menopause and Acne: Not Much To Worry
    By Cathy Taylor

Menopause comes with changes, both emotional and biological. It is when a woman stops menstruating for over a year that she goes through menopause and there are many symptoms associated with this condition. Skin problems, muscle and bone weakening, hot flashes, mood changes and joint pains are some common complaints. Some women experience acne during this menopause period.

Menopause and Acne: Causes Do not be alarmed if you witness acne during menopause, as it is quite common. Acne is linked with a menopausal woman taking HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) treatment. The HRT has progestin in the treatment and can cause the skin to breakout in a rash or acne, if excessive androgen is produced. However, treatment is possible through a form of Vitamin A, called retinaic acid.

    The Importance of a Plan
    By Jennifer Kalita

Because a solid foundation is essential to a strong entrepreneurial start, months and sometimes even years of preparation are critical for any budding entrepreneur, let alone a savvy boomer woman such as yourself. From building up financial reserves to crafting a well-researched business plan, boomer business owners must dig the well long before they're thirsty.

Thinking they were eventually planning on starting a business some day anyway, all too often boomer women get fed up with office politics, jump the corporate ship, and land amid the initial icy waters of entrepreneurship. With no plan in place, and little savings to help them stay afloat, nest eggs are soon depleted and woeful regrets pile up.

    "It's Not a Mood, It's Your Life."
    By Julie Clark Robinson

You did it! You've given yourself a break. You're reading - what's more, you're reading something that's not a To Do list, a bill, ingredients or the fine print on the back of a speeding ticket. Well done.

(I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here - I'm assuming that you're sitting down, dare I hope that your feet are up as well?)

At least for today, you can say you were able to carve out a few minutes for yourself. That means, even if the rest of the day goes south, you were able to create a pocket of pure joy for yourself. If you continue on this path from this day forward, in the end, hopefully, you should be able to look back at your life and consider that it was a happy one.

Okay, okay, I'm not THAT much of a simpleton! I realize it takes more than a few minutes a day to your self in order to achieve such a lofty goal. But this kind of conscious effort in several areas of your life is destined to make a tangible difference in your level of happiness.

Kids Aren't Home for Valentine's Day
    By Natalie Caine

Empty nester parents remember cutting doilies into hearts; glue sticks on tables, making heart shaped mail bags with our kids to take to school so they can collect their valentines, and putting hearts all around the house when they were asleep. I made pancakes and tried to cut them into heart shapes but mine never rose. At least I didn't forget the chocolate chips and cartoon valentines that come in a box with a lollipop sticking out. I always had a silly red heart sticker on my blouse to wear to work. No, I don't do that now!

As Tao Te Ching expresses in his words, what we can"t see holds great value. I am so grateful for those years of making hearts, writing poems, plucking daisies saying he loves me he loves me not.

I remember volunteering in the classrooms, bringing heart shaped iced cookies for the party. I use to make valentines, but not this year. I don't want to do that. I do want to send Valentines and put on my red lipstick to kiss the envelopes.

    Why Not Improvise?
    By Prill Boyle

When life veers from the script, why not improvise? That's what sixty-year old Keni Washington did. Literally.

I first met Washington in October of 2003 on a United Airlines flight from Indianapolis to San Francisco. Wearing a black turtleneck and carrying a tenor sax, he stood out from the throng of business travelers and Midwestern moms. He looked intelligent and intense in a gentle sort of way, and I thought to myself, I hope that man sits next to me. And to my delight, he did.

As soon as we settled into our seats, we began talking and didn't stop until the plane landed. We chatted about politics, philosophy, and music. I told him about the book I was writing on late bloomers; he told me about his own midlife career change. In May of 2005 I traveled to Indianapolis to interview him in depth. One of these days I might write a Defying Gravity sequel and tell the whole story, but for now, here's an abbreviated version:

    ABOUT THOSE WORDS
    By Nan S. Russell

Traveling over the holidays to visit family outside of Denver, we were fortunate to arrive after a blizzard stranded thousands at the airport, and depart before the cancellation of flights for a second storm. However, our holiday presents were not as fortunate. Okay, things happen.

Following up on the undelivered gifts we were informed by a customer service representative, "Your packages are scheduled to arrive on the 26th." No packages arrived on the 26th or the 27th or the 28th or the 29th . . . you get the point. Yet each time we called back, we were told they should be delivered tomorrow.

Credibility could have been preserved if the carrier had simply told us the truth.

    SWEET NOTHINGS
    By Georgia Richardson

I was reading a magazine article on Creativity that said, "Release the artist within." I thought I have an artist within? I was captured. Knowing Valentine's Day was just around the corner, my gray cells starting working overtime. I didn't have a clue what to do, buy, or give my significant other. I really wanted to do something different, something creative; I wanted to . . . release the artist within.

Coming up empty, I phoned my best friend to see what she does with her artistic insides. After explaining the article and asking for ideas, she responded with, "Stop reading that crap . . . buy him a tie." Oh now that tips the creative scale right off the edge, eh? A tie? Puleaseeee . . .

    Competitive Spirit
    By Donna Shepherd

I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me-the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace - Acts 20:24 NIV

Many (many, many!) years ago, I attended a cheerleading camp. All week long, we practiced our cheers and choreographed our steps. At the end of the competition, the best squad won a trophy. Another competition went on simultaneously. Whoever won that one received the coveted "Spirit Stick." After all, what would any self-respecting cheerleader be without that school spirit?

The competition escalated as we neared the final ceremony. Many of the girls thrived on the tension. Not me. I turned into a nervous wreck. I'm the type of person who throws in her cards when the competition heats up, or backs off when confronted with an overzealous opponent. My stomach quivers at the thought of such rivalry.

    Trust the Rooster
By Judith Sherven, Ph.D. & James Sniechowski, Ph.D.

It was the first night of our long awaited Baja Mexico vacation. We'd had a great time in Todos Santos with Jim's brother Bill and his wife Kelly who took us to Miguel's for guacamole and nachos and then on to the famed Hotel California for a long, leisurely dinner.

Now we were in bed, 10 pm Baja (Mountain) time.

What appeared as a modest, casual little hotel on the web suddenly turned into a cacophony of yapping, snarling dogs serenaded by a cat in heat.

    Welcome to Mexico!

The four-legged locals exhausted themselves around midnight and we finally got some sleep.

    But not for long . . .

The Simple Secret to Creating an Extraordinary Business
    By Suzanne Falter Barnes

No, this isn't an essay about turbo goal setting, keyword optimization, or high pressure sales tactics.

It's actually about harnessing the power of love to build your business.

Yep, you read that right. Love. That's all it takes to build the business of your dreams.

Now before you dismiss me as being way to woo-woo to take seriously, let me explain myself. For the last week I've been sick in bed with bronchitis . . . and so I've been doing a lot of thinking.

When I look at the really profitable months for my business last year, they all had one simple thing in common - my site was a hub of generous energy. There were free teleclasses going on; I was personally responding to lots of emails; I was posting like mad on my blog and my essays were some of the best I'd written. I was in full, passionate swing with my business . . . and it felt like I was in total "flow'.

Consider a College Town for Retirement
    By Jan Cullinane

Question: Where can you be assured of plenty of cultural activities, stimulating intergenerational discussions, sports, entertainment, restaurants, bookstores, libraries, stable housing prices, a well-educated community, and perhaps top-notch medical facilities?

Answer: college towns. For those who would rather hit the books than hit a golf ball, it's worth consideration. For many baby boomers, living in an academic community provides the vitality of college life without the hefty tuition.

Colleges are responding to this trend with lifelong learning opportunities for retirees, such as the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement in Asheville, and the almost 100 peer-driven Osher Learning Institutes at various college campuses nationwide.

THIS OLD HEART OF MINE - PART I
    By Janet Horn, M.D.

If several Baby Boomer women gathered together and were asked to name the one disease which is their greatest health fear, most would probably say breast cancer. But the statistics show that we should be just as, if not more, frightened of heart disease (coronary heart disease, or CHD).

While 44,000 women will die from breast cancer this year, 500,000 will die of CHD, which is also the number one killer of both women and men. CHD ranks first among all disease categories in hospital discharges for women. And cardiovascular disease, which includes coronary heart disease, stroke, and other diseases of the blood vessels, causes nearly 39% of all female deaths in America.

Are you a woman who feels selfish and uncomfortable focusing on yourself in midlife even though you've been there for everyone else?
