Boomer Womens' World
February 2008

Dear Dotsie,

"Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly . . . . Leave the rest to God." ---Author Unknown

Greetings,

The NABBW is cruising along with our educational opportunities. If you are perimenopausal or in menopause, you should be certain to listen to or read the PDF about hormones, or the lack thereof. I was shocked by all the common side effects that midlife women suffer due to unbalanced hormones. And ladies, there is a solution. There is no need to suffer through this. Be sure to educate yourself about this hot topic. Pun intended.

We took your feedback to heart and have created excellent opportunities to keep you up to date with all boomer women issues. Please see the upcoming teleseminars concerning midlife women's heart health and overcoming toxic burden which pertains directly to cancer issues. Next month, our focus will be entrepreneurship at midlife.

Now and again, I have the pleasure of speaking on behalf of boomer women. Please view this link from the ABC internet show Top Priority where we discuss the midlife crisis, which I prefer to call the midlife opportunity.

Looks like boomer women will be taking in the Vegas sites the weekend of April 11-13, 2008. The Forum Community has been hounding me for an opportunity to meet face to face. Many of us have met as we've traveled the US and Europe, but it's time for us to gather for a Girl's Weekend Get-Away, nothing but fun. Please email info@boomerwomenspeak.com if you are interested in joining us.

We're excited to share that members from 20 states - plus Canada joined the NABBW during January. Numerous women were from the following states - California, Maryland, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Minnesota.

Be sure to read about our Featured Member. I use Kristine's services for my bookmarks, note pads, business cards, etc. Also browse the articles that cover these topics: boosting the elderly's spirits, discovering your life calling, heart disease in women, loneliness in the empty nest, eating healthy while dining out, encouraging others, compulsive spending and gambling, accepting menopause in a positive way, and living in the moment.

Onward with grace,
Dotsie

"I joined NABBW to make some connections and to see what other women my age were up to in life. I got so much more than I anticipated. The Forums are active and members are eager to share their wisdom, stories, problems and have a laugh. Dotsie, the president and founder brings us resources for information, products, discounts on services that I actually want and need.

Since I work from home, alone most of the time, connecting with my sisters on NABBW is a delight. I am often inspired as well as tickled to chat, learn, support others and be supported. It's been great for business too!

Thanks Dots."

FEATURED MEMBER
Kristine Lewis, Dream Press

I grew up in a small town in mid-Michigan called Midland. Midland is the headquarters for Dow Chemical. We had a wonderful little shop in town called Paper Moon. This shop was filled with adorable stickers, pencils, papers and much more. It was such a special treat to visit Paper Moon! My love for paper has never ended!

Fast forward 25 years...I now live in Wixom, Michigan which is a suburb of Detroit. I have a 5 year old son named Benjamin (who just started kindergarten- yikes!) and I live with him and my boyfriend Bart.

My professional experience over the past 15 years includes marketing, event planning, office administration and graphic design in various industries. My favorite aspect of every job has been the event/party planning and the creation of beautiful marketing/advertising collateral. In my personal life, I have created many invitations, party favors and wedding programs for family and friends.

Dream Press was born out of my desire to turn my passion into a profitable profession and to gain a better work/life balance. I also believe in this world of lighting-speed technology that taking the time to jot a note on your own personalized notecard that expresses your personality or give your party guests a personalized favor is so meaningful.

I hope you will take some time to explore this website and hopefully find that perfect product for yourself or a special friend. Please feel free to email me at anytime with your feedback, product recommendations or just to say "hi" at kristin e@dreampressonline.com.

NEW WRITING CONTEST!
Favorite Concert Memories

I recently attended Rain: The Beatle's Experience. If this show comes to your town, see it! The walk down memory lane was exhilarating. Being amidst all the hair dye, highlights, gray hair, and balding men tickled and energized me. Stiff, conservative men in their button down, oxford shirts were belting out lyrics and chair dancing like I've never seen before. This was my generation at midlife acting just like we did as teens. I was feeling more groovy than I had in years.

Flashbacks to the Ed Sullivan show, men walking on the moon, Prell commercials, the white album, flower power, peace signs and so much more rushed through my mind. For two hours, I was stuck in the 60s. It was a trip.

So I got to thinking... how about a contest that takes us back to the good old days of dancing and screaming at concerts...

Here's the contest. You have 500 words to tell us your favorite concert memory. Lay it on us. Knock yourself out. Take us back. Who were you with, what were you wearing, and what music were you jammin' to?

Submissions should be written in a Word document with FAVORITE CONCERT MEMORY in the subject line, and attached to an email addressed to contest@nabbw.com.

Deadline - April 15th
PRIZE MONEY - $100.00 and F-R-E-E membership or renewal in the National Association of Baby Boomer Women. Plus your story will be placed in the Our Voices section at www.boomerwomenspeak.com. Please make sure to include your name, email address, and short bio at the top of your entry NOT in the body of the email.

Good luck!

Sheltering Thoughts about Loss and Grief

Sharon Gilchrest O'Neill has been a Marriage and Family Therapist for over twenty-five years. In Sheltering Thoughts O'Neill offers comfort to those going through the grieving process. Navigating across grief's terrain can seem lonely and uncertain. ShelteringThoughts is a warm embrace; hand-holding guidance; a tender voice filled with encouragement. Words of comfort from people like Helen Keller, C.G. Jung, Joseph Campbell and Elizabeth Kubler Ross serve as reminders that we are not alone in our grief. When we experience a loss there is the tendency to feel isolated, but "Concealed grief has no remedy," in the words of A Turkish proverb that encourages us to allow others to share in our feelings of sadness in order that we may grow and heal. The carefully chosen phrases give us permission to find our way through the times of darkness according to what feels right for us, but with the gentle prodding that moves us forward and eventually out into the light.

This compilation is a gesture of support that is both kind and nurturing. Share it with someone as they brave the road of loss and thus provide them with friendship at their fingertips. They need only to page through the many words of solace to find those that speak to their feelings and concerns, and they will find parcels of peace.

Trees are Bare
Pamela Marie Brown

When caring for a loved one who is dying one finds themselves dipping down and drawing form pools of strength in order to aid the mind, body and spirit during an attempt to minister comfort. Trees are Bare chronicles the months Pamela Marie Brown spent attending to her mother, helping her wage a battle against the cancer that eventually took her life. She transitions through sadness, grief, despair, anger... and finds a way to enable herself to serve her mother with compassion. Brown acknowledges how difficult the journey was; the experience most certainly changed her. She allowed herself to feel completely the gamut of emotions that accompanied that experience and resisted the temptation, and sometimes the pressure, to compartmentalize the messy pieces and to move on. Journaling helped her sort through complex feelings and proceed at the pace that felt right for her.

Brown hopes to remind those grappling with similar circumstances to be gentle with themselves; there is no right or wrong way to grieve; individual paths will vary in length, in intensity and in direction and it is all okay. The gift of being able to care for those we love in their hour of greatest need quiets our souls and calms our hearts. There are lined, empty pages in the back of the book to encourage the reader to write their own thoughts or personal reflections; assisting them in the process of healing.

Leigh Anne Jasheway-Bryant is called "The Accidentail Comic" but after you read her debut novel, Life is Funny, I'm sure you'll agree that her humor writing is no accident. It's pure talent.

Life, politics, secrets that become front page news, hairdressers who give new meaning to the word dysfunctional, and our main loveable, witty character, Judy; a hairdresser UN-extraordinaire, who dreams of one day becoming a stand-up comedian.

Does she finally go for it? Uh huh. Sure does. Not only that, Judy uses tidbits overheard at "the shop" from one gubernatorial candidate's wife. Her monologue has everyone in stitches; well, everyone except the candidate; that is. Sparks fly and suddenly Judy finds herself running against him for office.

I won't spoil the read by telling all. I will say I was tempted to count the laughs I got out of this book but I can't count that high. Out loud funny yet uplifting, Life is Funny has it all.

WHO LOVES YOU?
By Barbara E. Friesner

I was in a card store and a woman standing next to me was buying a huge stack of Valentine's Day cards. I watched for a while as she picked a bunch of cards for friends, as well as cards for her husband, her mother, her father, her mother-in-law, her father-in-law, her children, her grandchildren, and her grandchildren's teachers - and those were just the ones she picked after I started watching!!

I said to her "I hope you're going to get lots of cards, too" and she said "Nah, I'm too old for that!"

Serendipity
By Prill Boyle

How does one discover a calling? The honest answer is, I'm not sure. For the majority of us, I suspect, the seeds appear in childhood. (My interviews with late bloomers bear this out.) But other than that, I can't really say.

What I have noticed, however, is that serendipity often plays a role.

Take one of the first late bloomers I ever interviewed, Linda Bach, whose chance encounter with a medical student at a bar in the Cayman Islands changed her life. As Linda and the young man got to chatting, she confessed that she'd always wanted to go to medical school. "Well, why don't you go now?" the man said. She was in her forties. Surely, she thought, no school would want her as a student.

COMPULSIVE SPENDING AND GAMBLING
By Karen V. Stephen, Ph.D.

What is Compulsive Spending?

The holidays are a perfect time to discuss compulsive spending. Isn't everyone a compulsive spender when the holidays roll around? Doesn't our country encourage overspending at this time of year? Isn't racking up the credit cards the American way of life?

Unfortunately, all of the above questions can be answered with a yes.

But for most women (the gender most prone to compulsive spending problems; although men when they do overspend, tend to do so with big-ticket items), some sort of limit is kept and the compulsive spending is limited to the holiday season.

Calling all kids: Lights, camera, action!
By Mary Ann Cooper for GRAND Magazine

Acting and film-making schools can give your grandchild poise and confidence

You may be a proud grand who thinks your grandchild "oughta be in pictures," because you see that same teen or preteen flourishing in the spotlight. If so, you might think about enrolling your grandchild in acting or film school. It would give the child real-world, hands-on experience as well as give both of you a souvenir DVD or just good old-fashioned memories to last a lifetime.

Lots of grandparents enroll their grandkids and pay for the tuition. This has less to do with becoming a "star" and more about giving kids the opportunity to develop their creativity and self-esteem, as well as becoming comfortable and confident in pressure situations or performing in front of large or small groups. Of course, students can also apply what they learn to future career plans.

Heart of Glass
By Janet Horn, M.D.

This could just be one of the worst months of the year, particularly if you don't like cold and snow, saved only by Valentine's Day - that sweet and corny holiday. I've always loved it, mainly because it seems to bring out affection in even the most undemonstrative people. So, just like last year, I'm going to discuss in this column that ubiquitous symbol of this holiday, the heart. Also, in case you didn't know, the American Heart Association, as part of the "Go Red for Women" movement, has designated February 1 as "National Wear Red Day" to emphasize the importance of heart disease in women.

By now, you've probably heard or read all about coronary heart disease (CHD) in women: how it is the number one killer of women in this country; how the symptoms are often quite different from those that men have; what the factors are that put you at risk for CHD; and how you can actually decrease your chances of getting it by modifying those risk factors that can be modified.

How-To Create A Book Marketing Plan (The Smart Way)
By Sheri McConnell

Marketing plans are great guides for business owners. And a book marketing plan is the specific tool you will use to find and create places to sell your book (s).

Consider these six areas when developing your marketing plan.

1. The Audience: Who did I write this book for? Make sure you narrow your focus and target specific groups. Try to network with networks instead of one-on-one.

2. The Product: What kind of book is this? Check out your competition; see what the latest trends are with books similar to yours. One current trend is to sell your how-to book at the end of free how-to teleseminars.

2008 Empty Nesters Clip Clopping Along with Love
By Natalie Caine

When our precious ones were younger, we were dashing. Now they are still precious, but we aren't dashing towards them.

Love, what is it you are dashing towards and what is ok for you to simply sit and ponder?

My empty nester friends, who are single, want to sleep through the day and night of Valentine's Day. Married ones long for surprise. All of them remember and love the laced hearts they made with their children, as well as, the pink iced sugar cookies and red construction paper all over the floor.

This is a Test
By Georgia Richardson, Queen Jaw Jaw

This is a test of your emergency Valentine Heart-O- Meter. This is not a real emergency. If it had been a real emergency, you would have been instructed to send me a 5 lb box of Godiva chocolates. (Feel free to act on this, though)

Nope, it's not a REAL emergency, but then again, maybe it is. Do you know someone who is alone? Without a Valentine or someone to say, "You matter!"

Now hold on, I know that VD day has past. (I've reallllly got to stop calling it that). But hear me out . . . .

Yesterday I received a call from one of my sons. He said, "Mom, no matter how old I get, YOU will always be my Valentine." Of course I waited for him to say, "Can I borrow a kidney," or something else I would not want to part company with. But nothing; only silence. He meant it.

Eating Out Without Pigging Out

It seems that many more people are eating out more frequently. You could be setting yourself up for weight gain if you are a frequent diner - but it need not happen. With a little effort you can have as much control over what you eat when you dine out as when you eat at home. The following tips give you the tools you need to win at the restaurant game

1. Get a Little Something on the Side. Salad dressing is not the only topping that can be served on the side. You can maek the same request with sour cream, sauces, cheese, any toppings and most seasonings.

Call to Praise
By Donna Shepherd

Through Him, therefore, let us constantly and at all times offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of lips that thankfully acknowledge and confess and glorify His name. - Hebrews 13:15 amp

I received the nicest email from someone who stumbled across my devotionals. Dianne complimented me on the site, and encouraged me to keep working for the Lord. I appreciate the fact that Dianne took the time to cheer on a fellow Christian she has never met.

Her email caused me to wonder. When's the last time I applauded someone? Have I inspired someone to work harder in his or her ministry? And most importantly - have I been faithful to praise God?

Being Present
By Jan Cullinane

It was a dimly lit restaurant. Still she was dressed in pink, and while I admit it's hard to tell the gender of three month old babies, clothing color is a reliable clue. So, it surprised me when the waitress began playing with my granddaughter, asking "How old is he?"

Twenty minutes later, that same waitress served our dinners into my daughter-in-law's lap, spilling the contents of her tray as she approached the table. We made light of the occurrence, assisting her with basic cleanup, but the interaction got me thinking.

How to Accept Menopause in A Positive Way
By Cathy Taylor

Menopause is yet another chance for us to see life as a blessing. Not many women say it's easy.

What makes this mid-life transition less stressful is really how we think and feel about ourselves. It is an undeniable chance to see how much inner work we have really done so far. Most women report that it can be a deal-breaker phase of life. In other words, women going through menopause often get the feeling 'its now of never'.

But whether you have been diligent about healing, moving on, staying open, remaining positive, or just barely keeping your head above water, for many women menopause offers you the opportunity to make big changes.
