there's this fella who has to brag about his vacations/cruises etc. How do you, nicely, tell someone they are coming across as bragging and we feel worse that we cannot go on those luxurious getaways!
We always say "How nice"....but c'mon! Enough is enough!

Love the quote, Yonuh.
As for how I would reply, Di, I guess for me it would depend on how well I knew the person doing the bragging.
For example, if this is a person I know well, I might sarcastically joke with them, and say something like, "Wow! You've managed to enjoy all those experiences, and yet you're still so modest!"
But if it was more of a situation where I merely know the person socially, I might find it useful to try that Southern lady comment: the "Well, bless your heart!"
It is simultaneously withering and polite, and it can be used in almost any situation.

If the guy stops for breath, you can always say, "Let me tell you about my grandchild!" Then he can listen to you brag for a while about something that's really important.

If the guy stops for breath, you can always say, "Let me tell you about my grandchild!" LOL! I love your suggestion, Sandy. And I might take you up on it. But what would make it funny is that I don't yet have grandchildren. So after I have stopped the boor cold by saying "Let me tell you about my grandchild!" then I would have to follow on with something humerously tossed in like, "I don't have any, but I just wanted to make the point that it is MY TURN TO BRAG." For me that might be a good way to get the point across...

he has not done it again, but usually on Saturday at the market. we'll see. Thanks everyone for your input. The grandchild thing won't work as I have none....but he doesn't either. So maybe i"ll use my husbands grand girls instead.

My suggestion of bringing up your grandchild was just a spur-of-the-moment idea. I was being flip. The gist of it was to brag about something yourself! But maybe that wouldn't work with this guy. Sounds like you have the situation under control.

Next time (he's at it again) I'm gonna use the "Well, bless your heart" or "God sure has blessed you two"!
See how he reacts!
