there's this fella who has to brag about his vacations/cruises etc. How do you, nicely, tell someone they are coming across as bragging and we feel worse that we cannot go on those luxurious getaways!

We always say "How nice"....but c'mon! Enough is enough!

I'm not sure there is a nice way to say it without sounding envious, Di! Some people are just oblivious to other people's feelings. You could just say something like "The way you tell your stories sounds like bragging, but I'm sure you don't mean to make other people feel bad because they're not as rich as you are!"

My favorite 'comeback' was spoken by C.S. Lewis' wife in the movie about them (forget the name of the movie, speaking of forgetting stuff!). Her comment was something along the lines of "are you trying to be obnoxious or were you born that way?"

Okay, I had to go look it up; the exact quote is: "Are you TRYING to be offensive, or merely stupid?"

The name of the movie is Shadowlands and stars Anthony Hopkins (I love him!)

Love the quote, Yonuh.

As for how I would reply, Di, I guess for me it would depend on how well I knew the person doing the bragging.

For example, if this is a person I know well, I might sarcastically joke with them, and say something like, "Wow! You've managed to enjoy all those experiences, and yet you're still so modest!"

But if it was more of a situation where I merely know the person socially, I might find it useful to try that Southern lady comment: the "Well, bless your heart!"

It is simultaneously withering and polite, and it can be used in almost any situation.

If the guy stops for breath, you can always say, "Let me tell you about my grandchild!" Then he can listen to you brag for a while about something that's really important.

LOL! I love your suggestion, Sandy.

And I might take you up on it.

But what would make it funny is that I don't yet have grandchildren. So after I have stopped the boor cold by saying "Let me tell you about my grandchild!" then I would have to follow on with something humerously tossed in like, "I don't have any, but I just wanted to make the point that it is MY TURN TO BRAG."

For me that might be a good way to get the point across...

I am different when someone goes on and on being boring and bragging. I just get up and walk away, saying not a word, I just up and walk. Who cares??? That puts an end to the problem real fast!

I had a friend who bragged about everything. He was the greatest
person in the world: He'd help anybody, anywhere, anytime. But
he bragged. And it was a huge turnoff. Don't know what you do about it. He's with the Lord now.

Sounds to me like the problem with his bragging is done with, as is he!

Yes. I didn't mean to sound like I was wondering what to do about
"HIS" bragging. I didn't phrase that correctly. I meant I don't know what to do about folks' in general who brag too much! It is
difficult to correct people you actually care about. They may
have positive attributes, outweighing negative shortcomings. Sometimes I'll post things quickly and in an unintentionally slant, come back in and rephrase 'em. But then again there are
those who don't like it when I edit stuff, either. So who knows?????

Just do whatever your comfortable with jabber and let that be the end of other people trying to run things. I post whatever comes into my head at the time I'm reading what someone has posted, to me that's the honest way to operate in a forum. I find just having fun seems to work most of the time...

he has not done it again, but usually on Saturday at the market. we'll see.
Thanks everyone for your input. The grandchild thing won't work as I have none....but he doesn't either. So maybe i"ll use my husbands grand girls instead.

My suggestion of bringing up your grandchild was just a spur-of-the-moment idea. I was being flip. The gist of it was to brag about something yourself! But maybe that wouldn't work with this guy. Sounds like you have the situation under control.

Next time (he's at it again) I'm gonna use the "Well, bless your heart" or "God sure has blessed you two"!

See how he reacts!
